Abstract

Starting from a brief description of the historical conditions of detention, especially regarding the way of feeding prisoners in the prisons from different regions of the world, the article presents some of the changes during de modern age, in this field, eventually focusing on the specific of rules and practices regarding feeding prisoners in the Romanian Penitentiary and Penitentiary Hospital Jilava from Bucharest. The article is the result of the visits and free dialogues of the research team (the authors of this article) with specialists from the Penitentiary and Penitentiary Hospital (doctors, directors, cooks, service personnel, administrative personnel and others), and with prisoners. In the context, also some other indicators regarding conditions of detention are analyzed (overcrowding, the deficit of working places for the prisoners, prisoners income from working activities with impact on the way of feeding the prisoners, the food calories for prisoners, and others), with impact on the way of feeding prisoners from Romania.
